Castles :: CASTELLO NORMANNO

The Castle of Tavolese was founded in the early 13th century. The medieval castle is situated in the hills between the counties of Tavernelle and Certaldo, the birthplace of Boccaccio, on the way that once led to San Gimignano and Volterra towards west and to Castelfiorentino and Pisa towards east. The first owners of the Castle used to be one of the most famous Florentine families, Farinata degli Uberti. Later, the Castle became the property of the Dell’Asino family, and was subsequently owned by the illustrious Canigiani family to which the mother of Petrarca also belonged. The last heirs, the Counts of Capponi, sold the castle to Clemente Carlo Kaiser in 1988 who undertook a complete restructuring of the Castle and the adjacent rural house, restoring their ancient beauty. In the last years the Castle of Tavolese has a new property that has renovated the offer of the agriturism, restoring 5 further apartments in a building near by the main Castle, just above the antique cellars, still maintaining the elegant style and the professional service that has always characterised the place.

The agricultural farm extends on 60 ha and produces Chianti from the Florentine hills as well as “Extra Vergine” Olive Oil (“Laudemio”) with biological methods. The “Bonollo” distillery in Greve produces from the grapes of the farm a tasty and delicate Grappa.
The nearest village, Marcialla, is at 1,5 km distance. In this village, there are small grocery stores as well as several excellent restaurants. The village of Tavarnelle with a supermarket, a pharmacy, and a bank is at 4 km distance, and Certaldo at 5 km. Florence is at 35 km from the Castle, and Siena at 40 km.

The current owners of the Castello di Tavolese live in the first floor of the castle. It is possible to rent the ground floor with its elegant courtyard and marvellous garden for weddings and ceremonies.
In the rural house adjacent to the Castle, that was fallen after the abandon of the land, has been transformed into 6 elegant apartments. Other 5 apartments have been restored in the building above the cellars. Although they are equipped with all modern comfort (independent heating, telephone, Sat-TV), the apartments have maintained the charm of Tuscany’s ancient rural houses. At the ground floor of the rural house, there is a large room (“Sala della Cinta”), in which breakfast is served every morning and lunches and dinners for up to 25 persons can be organised. On request, the guests may taste the specialities of the area and the wines of the farm.
In the adjacent barn, which opens on a furnished and very panoramic terrace, there is a covered, heated swimming pool. In summer, this pool is connected to the external pool. In the barn, there is also a hydro-massage shower.

Holiday rentals at the Castello di Tavolese include daily cleaning of the apartments and breakfast with biological products from the farm. Reserved parking place on the property.

The Castello had shed its winter drabness, and was well presented and tidy. The staff were immensely helpful and courteous, the cleaning/laundry thorough and timeous and the breakfast provision more than adequate.
